Zach Bitter’s World Record Playbook: Inside His Pre‑Race Protocols and CurraNZ Strategy

on December 29, 2025

American ultra-running legend Zach Bitter attempted a 100‑mile World Record on December 10 in Phoenix, Arizona, a race that took over a year of the planning.

While the day didn't come together, which he put down to "trying to pack too much into the prep," it wasn’t meant to be, but he'll recalibrate and attempt again later this year.

In this pre-race Human Performance Outliers podcast, “Desert Solstice | Chasing Fast 100 Milers”, Zach breaks down the nuts and bolts of what goes into a record attempt: fuelling, hydration, cooling, pacing – and how he integrated CurraNZ into the plan.

He explains how his approach to fuelling has evolved, outlining a significantly higher carbohydrate intake than in earlier record attempts, backed by careful gut training in long sessions.

Hydration and cooling get equal billing: Zach talks through his electrolyte strategy, fluid targets, and practical cooling tools to keep core temperature in check on the exposed Arizona track.

Finally, Zach reflected after the race, "I don’t want to be negative though. The last half of 2025 was the best training cycle I have had since moving to Austin four years ago. After an off-season, I believe it will pay forward in 2026!"
