When Trail Running NZ Newsletter reader Elspeth Knewstubb won a free pack of CurraNZ in the Sceptics Competition, she was unconvinced. Could a blackcurrant supplement really change her running game?
Armed with CurraNZ capsules and a training log, Elspeth set out to find out for herself - documenting how she felt through a week of training without CurraNZ, then repeating the same workouts while supplementing.
What followed took Elspeth by surprise.
Elspeth says: "I was on the fence about CurraNZ – how much difference can blackcurrants really make after all?
"Turns out it does make a difference! I had far less delayed onset muscle soreness, even after running 6.5km straight down a technical tramping track (and that was pretty early in the experiment!).
"I also had a more consistent feeling of energy level during exercise and less fatigue afterwards.
"The effects seemed to build up after a few days of taking it. So, after 4 or 5 days of taking it I generally just felt stronger and more energetic.
"Will I take it every day from now on? Probably not. But it's definitely worth trying it out, particularly in hard training blocks, or for a big event. I'll be investing in some a few weeks out from my next big race for sure."
