Mysterious Purple Running Beast Encounter Delights Runners

on November 21, 2024

Following on from our explosive documentary, 'In Search of the Running Beast', there have been numerous encounters around New Zealand with the CurraNZ-coloured beast, including a notable appearance at the recent NZ Backyard Ultra World Satellite Championships.

A chance interview revealed that the fast purple reptile believed the team would be completing 1,500 laps at the event. When asked why the estimate was so high, the beast responded: "Because this year they are on CurraNZ".

See the full interview details at the bottom.

Several months ago there was another sighting of the dinosaur kind at the Great Naseby Water Race (GNWR), although the Beast remained incognito.

Instead of stealing CurraNZ from unsuspecting runners, the Beast demonstrated a surprising change in form, giving away packs of CurraNZ by hiding them amongst people's possessions.

Delighted squeals could be heard when exhausted competitors wearily rummaged through their kit and found some blackcurrant gold with a note from the one and only Running Beast.

The GNWR is NZ's longest ultra-marathon at 200 miles. You'd need some recovery help after that kind of punishment and the Beast obliged with some purple recovery presents.

The next public outing was another legendary Southern event, the Rakiura Challenge on Stewart Island. The Beast somehow made the watery crossing with his CurraNZ stash, and despite lurking in the shadows, planted our blackcurrant bombs where muddy, tired finishers could find them.

The Running Beast has hinted at more appearances this summer and, following his early stealing rampages from unsuspecting runners, has revealed he is intent on creating some public goodwill as penance. If you're checking your gear after a race, have a look for surprise blackcurrant offerings as the Beast just may have paid you a visit...
